Greek Police Boost Protection After Demonstrations Against Israeli Cruise Ship

Greek officials have significantly increased protective protocols at multiple major harbors in an attempt to keep demonstrators from targeting a cruise liner transporting visitors from Israel on an 11-day voyage around the Mediterranean.

Latest Protests Trigger Increased Security

These protective measures at Patras and Katakolo was implemented following earlier rallies when the MS Crown Iris docked at Kalamata in the past few days. Previously, travelers aboard the same vessel were prevented from disembarking and the ship was forced to divert to Cyprus after local residents held rallies on the Aegean isle of Syros.

"Despite the truce, Israel is still continuing its attacks in Gaza," remarked Christina Lada who joined the Kalamata demonstration. "Civilian, unarmed civilians are being fatally injured."

Passenger Encounter and Public Opinion

From the upper deck, travelers watched as demonstrators in Kalamata shouted: "You need the police, you're not welcome in Greece."

A leading campaigner, who dedicated the summer to coordinating peace demonstrations throughout Greece, declared: "Citizens of Israel who support the decisions of their government aren't accepted here."

International Context and Foreign Relations

An international relations expert noted: "Due to regional nearness and our longstanding relationships with the Middle East, the typical Hellenic citizen is more attuned to what is transpiring in Gaza than the average central or north European."

"Greece is in a challenging situation," he elaborated. "Israel is significantly more crucial for us as an associate than it is for the majority of European countries."

Commercial and Travel Consequences

Official data reveal that over 600,000 tourists from Israel traveled to Greece in 2024, with forecasts of increased visitation this year. This considerable inflow highlights the greatly strengthened connection between the both states since the 1980s, when Greek governments maintained a strongly supportive position toward Palestine.

Tactical Partnership and Regional Considerations

Regarding Hellenic administration, Israel serves as not only a significant counterbalance to neighboring competitor Turkey but also offers the supplementary bonus of better official channels to Washington.

"The Hellenic Republic is not going to endanger its connections with Israel," commented the expert. "However from a compassionate viewpoint we must be more embracing, more equitable, more determined to demonstrate the misdeeds of Israel in Gaza."

Expanding Protest Movement and International Response

The scale of the Greek demonstration campaign has clearly taken Israel aback. Lately, the state's external affairs office warned visitors to remain inconspicuous, while local media characterized Athens as a "paradise lost" due to political graffiti showing up on buildings in the downtown area.

The secretary-general of the Jewish Community Leadership in Greece shared apprehension: "Of course we're concerned. The type of language we're encountering can quickly turn into prejudiced."

Upcoming Developments and Requests

Progressively, critics have targeted Athens' strong connections with Israel. Up to 5,000 people recently traveled to Crete to call for the termination of the Souda Bay naval installation, a NATO base that after the commencement of war in Gaza has served as a key refuelling post for US aircraft carriers, combat aircraft and ships headed to Israel.

"We have achieved successes," stated Petros Constantinou. "Our primary request, now, is to stop any collaboration with Israel."
